Since I was a young boy, I’ve always been intrigued by old cars and trucks. Unlike some, many of my earliest memories don’t involve trips to Disney Land or rides on the merry-go-round with a parent looking on proudly documenting the moment on super 8 film. Not me, my most cherished memories involve my dad taking me to the junkyards just beyond Shea Stadium by Willets Point to find a part for his latest clunker or to exact a debt from someone who couldn’t cover the split on the recent prize fight or that week’s Football game. Those early trips to the unpaved roads and auto part graveyard, along with our treks to the train yards in Woodside, Queens would help shape my love of art, antiques, crate digging for records, antiques and finding the beauty in things others often leave behind. Here’s to seeking out, searching and finding those hidden treasures.

After checking the bottom of my shoes and my tighty whities. I confidently replied “That’s horse shit.” Quickly and visibly puzzled, she cocked her head before asking “How do you know the difference between the smell of dog shit and horse shit?” Knowing an answer was required. I quickly replied “I grew up in New York City.” Despite that lingering smell and the questions of it’s origins. I really enjoyed my time under and around Tacoma Bridge.

My wife loved the hand crafted furniture store as well as the crowded arts and crafts shop housed within the historic building. From there we continued to navigate the icy, snowplowed streets and sidewalks. I enjoyed the long exchange with the town drunk a little more than my wife did. Though I was somewhat surprised when she reached out to button up his flannel and zip up his jacket. The 28 degree cold didn’t seem to bother him much. With just a few blocks in us. My wife’s chills turned to shivers and we retreated Basecamp Books and Bites for some hot tea, pastry and a game of Jenga. It wasn’t long after that when we retreated to our warm Mini and headed back to Seattle. And while the rather harsh weather we’ve been experiencing hasn’t put much of a damper on our travels or adventures. We can’t help but dream of warmer, dryer days to come.I was thinking of posting links to some of the places that highlighted our trip. Instead I’ll leave you with a trip advisor that links some of the city’s highlights.
